Welcome to Mrs. Jiskra's 1st Grade Class!

 Parent Letter

September 26, 2008

Dear Parents:

On Wednesday, October 29th, the first grade students will be visiting the Carson Nature Center.  We will leave at 9:15am and return by 1:15pm.  The cost for this event is $6.50 per child.  Also, your child will need to bring a sack lunch or order one from the cafeteria.  Please send the $6.50 and lunch order form (if ordering) by Monday, October 13th.  If you would like to chaperone this exciting field trip, please contact me.

It is hard to believe that we have been in school for almost two months!  The days don’t seem quite so “long” now!  The children are working hard on their reading strategies and s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g- out those sounds in writing!  We are currently learning how to plan a story before we write.  This is a challenging process for beginning writers.  We want to have a solid beginning, middle and end.  We will be finishing our personal narratives and beginning our poetry unit in the next couple of weeks.

Our thematic units for the month of October will include Bones, Nutrition, Autumn, and Pumpkins.  These will be integrated into all areas of the curriculum.

There are two “Bones” homework sheets in the back of this newsletter.  Both of these sheets are due back by Monday, October 13th.  Please assist your child with this activity and have fun!!  You may use books, magazines, … even the internet to complete  the homework.

Reading skills are on the rise and therefore reading levels as well!!  Please remember that each evening; your child will bring home a book to read and will write a sentence or two on the same page as the sentence they wrote in class.  Parents don’t forget to sign the signature sheet confirming that your child has read their book.

Scholastic order forms for September and October are in the Friday folder.  Please return them by Monday, October 13th if you wish to place an order.

Mark your calendars for Sandburg’s traditional Halloween parade and party on Friday, October 31st.  The school parade will be held at 2:30 p.m. and classroom party will follow at 2:45 p.m.  More information will be coming home soon.

I look forward to meeting with each of you during conference time.  I will have many wonderful projects to share with you at that time!

Have a relaxing weekend!

Susan Jiskra
