 Welcome to Ms. Dallapiazza's Classroom

March 2010

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

It was great to have the opportunity to meet with all of you last week. Your children are very fortunate to have your support in their education. As you know, the auction was a big success thanks to the supportive Sandburg community. Thank you so much to Dana Rosenberg, Vicky Case, and Tara Manto for giving their time to help the kids create the caterpillars for the auction. The kids had a great time making them and enjoyed having them in the room for the week prior to the auction.

Please continue reading every day with your children. Now that they are becoming stronger readers please take some time to work on fluency. This can be done with rereading text and reading books that they can read with ease taking the time to use inflection as they pay attention to punctuation.

We are about to do some more “All About Writing.” We will study different kinds of “teaching” books and talk about what writers do when they are trying to teach through a book. We will try to use some of the same techniques that other accomplished writers use in their work. Please have some conversations with your kids about what they know a lot about and might be able to teach to someone else.  Many of the kids are very motivated writers and have been writing books at home. Please continue to encourage this and remind them they can bring these things in to share. We don’t have the time to share each day, so remind them to keep them in the backpacks or writing folders until we have a sharing day. It is so wonderful to see them growing as writers and working independently.

Math homework continues the same with the math packets. We are now working on mastery of the addition and subtraction math facts, so any time you can spend working on flashcards would be beneficial. We will be taking a times math facts test nearly every week. Please continue working on counting coins and telling time.

As spring approaches we will begin studying reptiles and amphibians, insects and spiders. We will be taking a trip to the Butterfly Pavilion April 13. More information will come as we get closer to the date.

Thank you,
