 Welcome to Mrs. Davenport's Classroom

First Grade is a magical year where we become proficient readers, writers and problem solvers in math (and other areas).   Our science curriculum includes animal studies of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects.  Also included are rocks and soil, nutrition, bones, the water cycle, dental health and forces of push and pull.  We look forward to our lively study of  Mexico, special holidays and Native Americans.  We learn to differentiate between needs and wants and why we have rules.  We create our own timelines and maps.

We are truly voyagers in learning as we explore and embrace new ideas, skills and strategies.  We read and write poetry, personal narratives, non fiction,  fiction , reports. . .  and anything which interests us. We organize and plan our writings,  and learn beautiful words which we thoughtfully weave into them.  Writing conventions, ideas, fluency and organization are our major teaching points, although we cover voice (which many young children bring naturally into their writing) and word choice.  Oh yes, and probably most importantly, we share and help each other to polish for publication!

We use our  powers of observation, touch, listening and conversation  as we embark upon our busy First Grade journey into learning and sharing  new ideas and concepts.  We incorporate technology, too, as an invaluable tool to enrich our skills as well as our curriculum.

Last, but certainly not least, our children  eagerly look forward to participating  in Art, Music, Computer Class, Library research and PE with very well qualified teachers.

As you can see, we cover a lot of territory and have many exciting skills and content areas to develop and integrate into our bright young minds!  We certainly keep our First Graders plenty busy!
